MBBR startup: new reactor filled with Enke Group biofilm carriers

A smooth MBBR startup decides how fast your plant reaches full treatment. Biofilm needs time to grow on the carriers, so a good plan saves weeks. In this guide, we explain the steps and show how Enke Group media helps.

What Happens During MBBR Startup

At startup, the carriers are clean and empty. Bacteria then attach to the protected surface inside each chamber. Over time, they form a thin biofilm layer. As a result, the biofilm starts to remove pollutants from the water.

In most plants, this takes four to eight weeks. However, warm water and steady feed can shorten that time. Likewise, cold water slows growth, so you should plan extra days.

Think of the carriers as a new home for bacteria. The better the home, the faster the bacteria move in.

How Enke Group Carriers Speed Up Biofilm Growth

Enke Group makes its carriers from virgin HDPE. This material has a stable surface, so bacteria attach quickly. In addition, our 19-chamber design protects the biofilm from shear. Therefore, the film stays in place even when mixing is strong.

A large protected surface area also helps. For example, more area means more room for bacteria on day one. Consequently, the reactor reaches its target removal sooner.

Five Steps for a Faster MBBR Startup

Follow these steps for a smooth start:

  • Fill the tank first. Add carriers at the planned fill ratio before you feed wastewater.
  • Feed at a steady rate. Sudden shocks can wash away young biofilm.
  • Keep oxygen high. In aerobic reactors, hold dissolved oxygen above 2 mg/L.
  • Watch temperature and pH. Stable conditions help bacteria settle in.
  • Raise the load slowly. This way, the biofilm matures without damage.

Common Startup Mistakes to Avoid

Many plants raise the load too early. As a result, the biofilm sloughs off and growth starts over. Similarly, low oxygen stalls the process. Finally, weak carriers can crack or crush.

Another tip is to seed the reactor with sludge from a working plant. This brings ready bacteria, so the biofilm builds faster. However, seeding is optional.
